Are there any special things to know about cleaning these grades of silver? Also, how to test for silver contents? Have the standard Gold/ silver test kit. How to use with 800, 833? Thanks Dale

Hello, I have an ultrasonic cleaner with a large capacity basket and heat source. Can anyone recommend a cleaner to use for 800and 833 silver? Is it recommended to use an ultrasonic cleaner?
Thanks, Dale

Dale,

A quality brand silver polish is recommended for your silver products. I do not recommend the ultrasonic since you are not trying to take out debris lodged in crevices of the silver. Patience and diligence will clean the silver and use will maintain it clean or you can store in silvercloth bag.

Experience with your testing kit will be help you identify the quality of the silver when exposed to the chemicals used with most of the kits. Learn by sampling known alloys to see how they react... in time you will be an expert.

Take your testing kit and put it on the highest shelf of your closet and pile many heavy things on top of it so you won't be tempted to use it in any but the most extreme cases. Acid and scratching and such damage silver which collectors find abhorent - even if you are doing it on the bottom or inside of something. These kits will also often give you false readings in either direction unless you are expert in how to use them. If you learn about silver and its patterns and makers and markings you will not need to test much of anything.
