In case anyone is wondering, yes I did do a search for polishing, but did not find this subject sufficiently addressed.

Being fairly new to silver, does anyone have any good advice on polishing gold wash? I have not found anything that does not wear down the thickness of the vermeil yet. I have heard that cream polishes are good to use, but read in another post that dips are good to use.

Any advice would be helpful.

Ah, gold doesn't tarnish, so I am at a loss as to why you want to do more than wash and dry it with a soft towel.

As in gold wash on sterling silver? Not solid gold obviously. If you look at the Shiebler fork I posted a little farther down, there is definitely tarnish in general, and one dark spot (it is not pitting, just one concentrated tarnish spot.)

And just for the sake of, is washing it with soap all that is necessary?

Use soap and warm water or a jewelry (dip) cleaner. The creams can sometimes be to abrasive and will wear down the gold wash faster. Do not use a high speed buffer as it will take the gold wash off rather quickly.

Use soap and water first; see what that does. If you feel moved to go further, use Wrights silver cream, thinned with water, a soft cloth, and a light touch.

Throw any dip polish you run across into the nearest trash can.

I did have my suspicions against using dip, it just seams too easy not to be harmful. Thanks for the tips!
