I just had what may (or may not) be a good idea.

I have the day off so I have been sifting through the patents of the year 1878 (It starts with patent 198733 smile ) and got to thinking - up until 1878 there were only 200,000 patents. If we had 200 or so people, if each person would be will to sift through 1000 patents, we could find all of the silver related patents up until that date.

This is probably a pipe dream, but I would consider doing it for say 1840 onward. This sounds quite boring, but really it is more like going through pages of history.

Just thought I'd throw the idea out there (and who knows what we might learn along the way?) I don't know if such an undertaking has ever been done, (I kinda think it would have?). Anyways, a high speed connection would obviously be needed to do it efficiently(while keeping ones sanity anyway), but really, all it would be is going through 100 patents for 10 days.

Like I say, just throwing it out there...

sounds interesting. in other words you would assign x number of people a certain section of numbers and then those people would go thru the patents 1 by 1 and isolate anything silver patented?

Pretty much, sounds like a bit of a daunting task but really is not that difficult and with use of the back button can be done fairly quickly. A quick reference can be jogged into Notepad or Wordpad when and if something is found, and results posted, then eventually categorized. Who knows, we might even identify some previously unidentified patterns and such.

Regardless I am slowly but surely going to go through the year 1878 to see if I can find the sewing item I have posted elsewhere.

This could also be done on a volunteer basis, as in I have seen elsewhere on the forums where people have looked for patents, so it could be like an open ended thing- post what you have searched through and what you have found. One thing is we would need some expertise from some of the more knowledgeable members in order to more quickly identify items- for instance, if Gorham made something that was patented, did the company itself patent it, or did a specific person who then sold/gave to the company?
