I was rather surprized to see a plain and late Brasher spoon sell on a popular online auction for the begining price of $1200.... I would have bet money that the auction would have ended without a single bid.

It amazes me that a wonderful spoon by Thomas Shields only receives a bid of under $200.

I understand there is a premium for makers who also minted coins or were involved with money and the mint.

Anyone else with insight

Fred

Message In response to Freds Coin Silver Message. Perhaps the buyer collects only specific makers or spoon style or specific style of a specific silversmiths. Or maybe that person won a state lottery and just went hog-wild.

When it comes to auctions, nothing should surprise you, Fred - anything can happen. Especially in a live auction, which this one was, and it went unopposed to a floor bidder. The location of this particular auction should tell you how exclusive the attending clientele was - for some people price is no object. Two other Brasher spoons sold recently online, one for $720, and one for $212. Prices corresponded to the sizes of the spoons, and not necessarily to age or quality. Go figure.

As for the Shields spoon, there have been a number of these up recently, all tracable to a recent live auction in which there were several groups of Philadelphia spoons sold, including a number by the Richardsons, some of which have also appeared.

This puts a whole new light on the three Brasher teaspoons I own..... I have little market sense and so I will keep them in my collection. I find it facinating to watch the prices go up and down. Thanks for the input.
