argentum1, I think in the 3 images that the top one is the repair and the bottom 2 are the befores?

It does look excelent. Just what one would expect of a laser welder.

Since I have only used one 2 times and only with gold I thought that they were not up to speed with silver, now it seems they are. Could the person who did the repair share some details of the machine etc.?

Thanks for showing us this great new technology!

It does look good. Can you post a picture of the inside after the repair?

This thread is essentially a continuation of
Repair of Sugar Tongs.

It is as good as one would hope this excellent technology would be! There is a small question as to the color of the repair, in the image of the inside it looks to be a shade darker. This is not a bad thing, as it will show an honest repair. I was wondering what was used for welding wire -- sterling or coin?

Also how long did it take? I would be very interested to know all this if you can?

It would be educational to weld a ruined pair of tongs and see how strong the join was after fixing the split by stressing it to the breaking point.

Many thanks for sharing this with us.

That is very impressive! I'd add to agleopar's questions, how you located someone to do it. I've never seen the service advertised -- although I haven't looked for it, either.

Here are the essentials
    Cost: $35.00 plus shipping
There websites which list $29.95 as a
    starting point.

Source: I did a search using 'laser jewelry
repair'. If you want the name of
the one I used please use email.
    Turnaround time: 6 days

Soldering wire used: I do not know. There is
site illustrating ring repair. There is a
statement indicating the wire is of the
same alloy as the ring. The ring is gold.

The discoloration was not seen until I cropped the photo. I looked at the repair again and did not see the line until I used a bright light source. Presbyopia has its good points.

Agleopar called the person doing the repair, and was told the repair started out on the laser but had to be finished as a silver solder job. The engraved line where the break was also had to be reengraved. So this is not a true laser repair representation. It still looks good.

The laser was used up to the point where he started to go through the thin part underneath the engraving. Also he was afraid that the high temperature of the weld was making it brittle. At that point he went to the old tried and true methods. The important part of this very good repair job is that it was done well!

Thankyou argentum1, I learned that you now can laser weld silver. I will try to find out more and do a post on it.
