The metal smiths among us might appreciate this article:
[<gone from the internet> aws.org/wj/amwelder/9-00/fundamentals.html]
Understanding Brazing Fundamentals.
The rest of us most likely will find it too detailed and too technical.

Abstract:
Brazing (to solder together) with a silver-containing filler metal, commonly called "silver brazing," is widely used in manufacturing or maintenance. Brazing with a silver-containing filler is one of the most versatile methods of metal joining in use today there are numerous technical reasons as to why, which the article expands upon.

Article's Conclusion

Brazing with silver-containing filler metal is an effective means of creating strong, leak tight joints on a diverse group of base metals. By clearly understanding the process, its fundamentals and how to apply them, it can be a cost-effective and reliable method of manufacturing metal-to-metal joints.

Scott,

Interesting article and a bit on the technical side.

"Brazing" is the correct term used for high temp silver "solder" (1000 degree+ F range. The base metal expands under the heat of the torch and the silver bearing brazing alloy actually penetrates the base metal and forms a strong bond. The flame of the torch is used to heat the base metal and the heat of the metal will then melt the brazing alloy (solder).

"Solder" is the term techically reserved for low temp bonding approx 500 degree F range.

Fred,

Thanks for the reply.

I was sure it was too technical for me but I really wasn't sure about our metalsmith members.

I am glad you found it interesting.
