I'm going to Chicago this weekend with a friend who's taking some sort of tour of Northwestern University on Saturday. So I was hoping to do some antique shopping that day. Can anybody recommend some antique shops that carry silver and jewelry, especially larger group shops? I won't have a car, but I can take public transportation anywhere in the city.

Thanks!

Unfortunately it's now 15 years since I moved from Chicago, so my specific knowledge is probably of little use. I'd just hit the phone book, and look for north side locations (Halsted and Clark used to have several), or River West for more upscale. There should still be one or two in Evanston (where Northwestern is). And Powell's bookstore is likely worth a visit; I used to find the north side branch more productive as it wasn't constantly picked over by U of C folks. The Art Institute of course has excellent silver in its decorative arts galleries, if you want a non-buying stop as well.

And if you have a taste for declassé food, don't miss Harold's Fried Chicken -- one of the top three I've ever had!

Hello Paul!
My old stomping grounds!
Got a friend from the Windy City checking it out for me, for you. Do you plan to be in Chicago proper or just in the area of Northwestern U.?
RE: Silver, any era?
Will get back to you ASAP.
BTW My son recommends Topo Gigio's for great Pizza!

Another interesting quirk of the Art Insitute, if it hasn't changed in the near-decade since I last visited, is that the museum shop there stocked actual antique silver and jewelry. It wasn't always even priced completely outrageously. Stock was constantly changing, of course, but if you do go in that direction it's worth a look to see if they're still doing that. One of the few I know of to sell real antique pieces along with the museum replicas....

I will have to check out the Art Institute shop. I've never been to a museum that still sells actual antiques, hopefully the AI still does.

And Jersey, thanks for looking into it. I don't plan on just staying within the Northwestern area.

For eras of silver, I guess anything but new is fine.

There are two places I know of that might be worth visiting. The first is Broadway Antiques Market at 6130 N. Broadway-a group shop with something like 75 dealers-largely 20th century, but a good mix.

A personal favorite is Michael Fitzsimmons Decorative Arts at 311 W. Superior Street-specializes in all forms of American and British Arts & Crafts movement items.

There is also another antiques mall, Lincoln Antiques Mall-don't know anything about it other than it shows up in magazines from time to time.

At least in my day, the Lincoln Antiques Mall didn't have much silver -- although I did get a few pieces there. I think there might be a couple of Arts & Crafts oriented shops out in Oak Park, too. There's quite a good auction house there, although not likely to have a sale just when you need. And I can't remember the name or exactly where, it was somewhere very near the train tracks and probably close to Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop (itself always worth a visit), but there was a small shop in Evanston that did regularly have some decent silver....

Lived in Chicago (NW 'burbs) from 8 to 13, still think it's the best large city in the country, get back up there occasionally to visit my brother. Found some nice buys out at the antique malls in the Volo Auto Museum complex, about 35-40 miles NE of Evanston, enjoy the museum too, only real problem was that I couldn't afford either one of the two '60s E-type Jags they had for sale last time there. Guessing public transportation out that way might be problem though.

I can't go back without having a Chicago-style hot dog (minus pickled peppers), keep celery salt at home to make 'em - not quite the same. There's a great little place called the Wiener and Still Champion, right on Dempster in Evanston (not just hot dogs and all good food).

The Art Institute was probably the most bitterly missed part of Chicago, when my folks brought me down to Orlando in '71, we get some nice exhibits here now, but to spend the day wandering those huge halls is always awe inspiring.

Enjoy your trip!

My old stomping grounds also. When I lived there found silver rather scarce at first. But then I got to know a few dealers. The system then, and maybe now, was for silver and other valuable items to be tucked away, and out of sight. I knew several dealers who would not display any small item that might appear to be valuable. Instead, once the dealer go to know you, and decided you were really a silver buyer, he would start hauling stuff out from numerous hidey holes. So, if you don't see silver, ask. And start up a conversation. It's tucked away somewhere.

The shops move very frequently. Whole neighborhoods of shops migrate together. Have no idea of where they are concentrated now.

I'm starting to hope my friend picks Northwestern so I can go visit Chicago whenever...it sounds like a great place. I've only been there for layovers at O'Hare. I'm not going to have time to do everything this weekend. I also want to find some cool designer clothing stores and Chicago has one of the highest Zagat-rated Ethiopian restaurants in the country.

Men's clothing. My favorite designers are Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Vivienne Westwood, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Ann Demeulemeester, and Martin Margiela. I don't mind buying brand new or vintage, as long the piece has a great design. I like higher-end consignment stores both for clothes and vintage designer costume & silver jewelry like Chanel, Hermès, Gucci, etc...

Chicago has a couple of excellent Ethiopian restaurants -- also notable Persian and Peruvian, plus the more commonly available Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, etc. And Mexican, including Yucatecan which is pretty scarce in the US. As others have suggested, for me too it is one of the great American cities. (for me, grad school, UC, 1986-92)

North Clark has long been a center for the more hip clothing options. Michigan Ave has plenty of high-end stores; tends to be more conservative, though. The River West area was developed in the '80s as an art-oriented area, so you may find appropriate outlets there as well. Used to be a great store there for Memphis and other designer works, in a Louis Sullivan warehouse, but it burned....

Few years ago, a friend of mine, New York City native, was heading to Chicago for a 3 week window dressing job, told him that he would love the town, he said, "I'm from NY, I live in Miami, Chicago's just another big city."; I said, "You will love Chicago.". Called as soon as he got back and told me, "OMG, had the best time, streets were clean, incredible restaurants, and found new friends in every bar I walked into." Told him so!

Hi Paul,

There is a very large antique dealership that takes multiple consignemnt and covers three floors just up the road from Northwestern. It's called the Antique Mall and is located at the corner of Ridge and Lake in Wilmette, th suburb just north of the Northwestern campus. Try Mapquest, but if you have any trouble send me an e-mail and I can probably help, since I live right up the road.
