I recently acquired a shallow bowl (1"x5.1", 3 oz.), marked sterling, 135, London - 1684, Reproduction, and a mark appearing to be the old Tuttle pine tree [in an oval circle of dots]. Since there is no presidential crescent, I imagine it may have been made prior to Calvin Coolidge's presidency.

The problem is a fine pattern of light pits on the upper surface of the bowl that spoils it's appearance. Is this the sort of damage that may be buffed out? How does one go about it?

Salmoned, it is hard to give hard and fast advice without seeing the problem. Generally, just buffing pits will soften them but not remove them. Better to sand until they are removed and then buff.
Sanding can be done by hand with emery paper or by machine with cratex (rubber) or 3M wheels.

If they are minor a good tripoli polish followed by rouge may do the trick.
Good luck.

Yes, I know it's difficult to give advice without seeing the damage, but I can't really get a decent photo. I suppose I should just be asking for a polishing compound somewhat courser than Wright's Silver Cream. I wonder if auto-body rubbing compound might do the job. I'll give it a test try and and return with the results.

Unless yopu have done this before you might be better off just paying a silversmith. It is easy to buff flat spots onto a round object or worse yet overbuff.
