Ended Monday on that big auction site (with no bids) a piece that might be puzzling if it turned up without the packaging:

quote:
This little gem has been in our family for its entire life! It is a 1 1/2 inch sterling silver powder ladle in its original cellophane wrapper and its original velvet lined box. The ladle is marked STERLING and patent number 100,770 which would date it in the later 1800's. Inside the box is a little paper that reads: "Sterling Silver Powder Ladle To fill your compact without waste. Patent Des. No. 100,770 The box itself has a blue lid over a cream bottom, which has a basket-weave imprint on the surface. A sticker for "H.P. Whitmore Fine Arts, 1517 Dodge St. Omaha" (Nebraska) is still attached to the box bottom! To hold the ladle, there is a blue velvet pad with a white ribbon. Box is 2 1/3 inch by 1 1/4 inch.

I had never seen one, although I vaguely knew they existed. No indication of how or if this piece might be marked, unfortunately. At the price asked I wasn't going to buy it to find out....

My Mom has this item (sans box) in her salt spoon collection, fairly easy to track it down even without the box, marked on the back: STERLING PAT.DES. 100,700 (the catalog I keep of her pieces notes it as the patent number being incorrect). I'd run across it years ago (before I was on the internet) in a book on compacts. *makes note to double-check mismarking on the actual piece*
