I did this post once before (prior post). In that thread Paul Lemieux stepped up to share a portion of his collection: Insect & Spider Motifs

We would like to share additional collections. Here is the original post again.
---------------------------------------------

On the SMP main home page there is a section called A Collector's View®:

quote:
It seems as if there is a collector for everything. It takes a collectors view to discover the unique, interesting, bizarre and fascinating aspects of everyday objects.

Since the wide spread use of digital cameras it is now easier than ever and inexpensive to create an image library of one's collections. Using the digital camera's closeup features to highlight what you find of special interest provides expanded appreciation.

If you have a collection or part of a collection and would like to share it please let us know. You can share anonymously or use your SSF User ID or use your real name.

If you supply the photos and a little explanation we will consider putting it together into a slide presentation like we did for:

Let us know.

I suspect a lot of us are shy given the great stuff we've seen here. I have a modest little collection of calling card cases, for example, which I would be willing to show if anyone were interested, but it pales next to the magnificent treasures that some of you have.

Can I make a request? I loved the bugs--that was really fun. If anyone has a collection of birds, I would love to see it.

Polly,

Your collection of calling card cases will be most welcomed. Like Paul, you will need to prepare the photos and text and then send the text and images to me and I will prepare a slide presentation. I, and others, would appreciate it if you included photos of the marks. Send the text as one email, making sure your text includes the image file names that go with the text. To keep the email sizes manageable please send the images in small groups in separate email messages.

Thanks.

Are you sure? My collection of calling card cases is really very modest, as is my knowledge about them. I think I have 6 or 7 cases, none really remarkable, and I'm sure you folks know much more about them than I do.

I'm happy to show them off, but I'm a little embarrassed. My collection is not much more interesting than Olive the Parakeet's collection of teething bells.

We will decide whether any collection lends itself to a slide presentation. BTAIM, a few things to remember:
  • The section/feature is called A Collector's View ®.

You have started a collection. It may be modest but it's a collection.. As long as the text is insightful about how you came to start a collection and why you have selected what's in your collection it should fit the parameters of A Collector's View.

  • Collections tend to grow and change.

As your collection grows and changes; noting this and updating the slide presentation could also prove interesting. (Note: we may only chose to update a slide presentation once a year.).

  • Others may share your interests in calling card cases.

Other may also have a modest collection of calling card cases and they may want to contribute to the calling card cases slide presentation.

Okay, I took some pictures. I'll write up some text to go with them tonight or tomorrow and send them to you.

Actually, Scott, where do I send the pictures and text? Do I email it to info 'at' smpub.com? Or is there some other address I should use?

Thanks,
Polly

The info address is good but make sure the subject line starts with Silver or it may get lost to the spam bucket.

Polly, these are outstanding examples. You are too modest.

In just a few slides Polly has provided interesting insight into her collection. Thank you Polly.

If anyone else would like to share with us - I am ready to prepare the next slide presentation. Please don't hesitate to let me know.

It's already grown--this slide show inspired me to buy another case today. I'll wait until I've accumulated a few more before I bug Scott for revisions, though.

More collections, please! I know everybody has their own preferences and obsessions, but here are some themes I would love to see, if anybody collects them:

-Birds. Olive, my parakeet, would love to see a bird collection.

-Interesting repairs. Wouldn't it be fascinating and educational to see the range of ways people damage their silver and what craftspeople have done to repair it?

Or a related theme that has come up on some threads:

-Interesting alterations: "berried" spoons, ladles turned into nut bowls, calling card cases turned into iPod cases, etc. Does anybody collect those? Or the related:

-Fakes. I'm always fascinated when this comes up as a topic. Does anybody collect them?

-Monograms. I remember a thread about interesting monograms. Does anybody collect those?

I love the collection, Polly - and that you rationalize the acquisitions!

Paul's bugs are wonderful too, would offer to contribute some dragonflies - but suspect he'd find them too, ummm, pretty.

I want to see Cheryl's dragonflies!

Cheryl, if you think they're too "pretty" for Paul's slide show, perhaps you could make a slide show of your own?

Please?

Polly, thank you for sharing your collection. I especially liked seeing the Japanese-style example with the birds.

If you are interested in seeing other motifs or pieces, you can always create a theme post in the appropriate category. For example, Great Faces in Silver was a big hit as numerous members shared some of their favorite pieces with faces. You might want to start a "Birds in Silver" topic, for example.

Really have very few dragonfly pieces, collect mostly spoons and they're fairly uncommon - believe I've shown most here at various times. Also have a couple of small holloware pieces including a tiny German creamer - a random gift that arrived at a low point in my life and still gives me great pleasure.

Have been cataloging souvenir spoons in my tiny bits of spare time - have a fair number of lily of the valley motif pieces, mostly late 19th-early 20th century American. Also have several 20th century Viking-themed spoons, open salts, and pins that might group into a nice showing - mostly Scandinavian, but also a few American and Iona-style pieces. If there's any interest, could probably work something up.

Wow, nice collections everybody! Now I will have to see what I can put together to share. I love the bugs and would be happy to dine in heaven with my set of Durgin bug!LOL! I did get pretty excited to find a neat little Howard Sterling pin dish with flying beetle (very like the one pictured on p.99 of Collecting American 19th Century Silver). Other than the odd bug, I am all about the botanical renderings, so will pick a flower from my silver garden and put together some photos and text.

Currently the slide presentations fall under the headline "A Collector's View ®" or "A Collector's Eye". This is fairly broad, so a presentation can be almost anything Silver/precious metal that is collected. We would like the accompanying text and resulting organization to provide some understanding about how the collection was started, how it has evolved and what is in the collection.

It is nice when a collection is thematic like Paul's bugs or Polly's Calling-card cases but not everyone collects thematically. Some collect what they like (spoons, Jewelry, holloware) or they collect particular styles, craftsmanship, makers, or some other mix.

Silver Salon Member's all share a passion for silver/precious metals and the related arts. Learning about another's collection and what the roots/evolution of the collection are can be fascinating and insightful.

Collecting is often easier than creating a slide presentation---- for many of us when collecting we often let our passion and in the moment impulses steer us. Organizing a slide presentation can be fun and personally insightful & rewarding but the effort can feel like work.

I hope Cheryl (dragonflywink), Lisa and others will share with us.

Lisa,
I would love if could post a photo of your Howard sterling bug dish. They are one of my favorite companies, and it is always interesting to see pieces of their work.
