Sorry to bring this up in a silver forum, but does anyone know a good source of information about Gorham's bronze work? I have done an Internet search, but it hasn't really turned up much to help me. I purchased a small bronze tray recently with a Gorham Mfg. mark and haven't been able to find much to date it; it does not have the Gorham Foundry mark on it.

There is a small section on Brozeware in Carpenter's Book on Gorham but your best bet would be to go through Sam Hough at Brown University. There is TONS of information available on Gorham's many bronze works.

Here it is; the tray measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. I wondered if it were a pen tray, but
  1. it seems a bit short and
  2. the raised design would make it difficult for pens (or anything else) to sit in it.
The mark is difficult to read; the end of it is not well struck, but it has the Gorham anchor in the pentagon shaped lozenge and it definitely says GORHAM and I think the ending is MFG, and the number 011.

Hello again doc!

How great is that tray! I love it! I believe it is a lion & a ? What is the other animal? I have a similar tray, (not Gorham), with an Irish Setter. I have to see if it has a mark.

Will be busy for the next few days, if no one else answers with more info, I'll be looking for you.

BTW The Gorham company is your best shot!

I really love this piece. It is just a lion; from the way it's posed you would think it was standing over some prey, but he must be looking over a cliff or something. The item in the lower corner is meant to be a log.

I agree that it is unlikely to be a pen tray for the reason you say - pens would not sit well in it. My thought is it is either purely decorative, or an ashtray for either cigarettes or maybe cigars given the masculine lion theme. From what I can see in the photo the corners seem to be a bit dipped down to provide a convenient rest for a cigarette or cigar.

I attended a seminar given by Samuel Hough at RISD a couple months ago. I had been completely unaware of the depth of Gorham's bronze business -- as a foundry (they did the famous Gloucester fisherman statue that is in that city today), but also as an inhouse studio of sculptors. Sam would be the go-to guy on this. As an aside, he showed a film from the 20s that Gorham had produced as a marketing piece. Simply wonderful -- one scene showed a sculptor at work; others showed various silversmiths and production processes. I believe his intention is to release it eventually as a DVD with additional information about what is shown in the film.

Now that I am looking at it, I think you are right, Kimo. The pinched corners would be perfect for resting cigarettes; they are too narrow for cigars, unless you put them in to the middle of the tray and just rested the end on the corner.

Thank you, Seaduck, I will reach out to Mr. Hough.
