Silver on glass has a new meaning with winemaker Dave Phinney using Mercury Head dimes for the front label of one of his wines. The Liberty Head (Mercury) dime was made between 1916 and 1945 and apparently Mr. Phinney collected these dimes as a child and is now using them for this rather striking bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.

It has been a long time since I received one of these dimes in change and it is fun to see them again.

I have not tasted it yet as the reviews indicate it would be best after two to five years.

We visited my daughter in Ft. Worth over Easter and a grocery store there by the name of Central Market had this wine. They also had Orin Swift’s “The Prisoner” and “Saldo” and these are ready to drink now. I will share those soon with some friends that like Zinfandel.

All of their wines and those of many others seem to be close to or over 15% alcohol. The general trend to higher alcohol wine is apparently a result of global warming. The Wall Street Journal had an article some time ago that the French are concerned about this and are looking into ways to lower the alcohol without changing the taste. The winemakers in California seem to just make the wine with softer tannins so that it is ready to drink earlier and do not seem concerned about the alcohol level.
