Hope this isnt considered a silly question but I seem to always have a problems actually seeing the hallmarks & wonder which is the preferred means of magnification -- a loupe (what strength), a magnifying glass (if that - what strength) and/or one of those head type that jewelers/watchmakers use? I have lots to research & want to be as self sufficient as possible..This is truly a "newbie" question thnx cj

I have both a 10x loupe and a 30x loupe, and I have found both to be invaluable, depending on the size, location and condition of the marks.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have a few questions:

Scott, Yours appears to have a light & handle -- does this make it easier than a normal loupe?

I had a 10 loupe but never mastered using it..I know it takes concentrating on the eye using it..my loupe was lost in our cross country move.

Does anyone have a simple explanation on the best technique to get the maximum out of the loupe?

And as always, thanks for your responses.

CJ

cj, whatever you decide to get, I would recommend looking for it on one of the online auction sites; I've gotten two loupes (a 10X and a 20X) quite inexpensively. But I most often use a 2" diameter Bausch and Lomb pocket magnifying glass - don't know the power, though.
