Happy New Year to All! Hope everyone had a good time and got home safely.

I am thinking about having 2 pieces framed - one is a Gorham art nouveau lid and the other is an elaborate bon-bon spoon.

Has anyone else done this before?

What should I ask for beside the usual acid-free, archival quality material?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I've been wondering the same thing. I've been thinking about displaying some of my calling card cases or perhaps silver hair combs in frames and would love to know how other members do this.

Shadowboxes that open so the piece can come out for polishing? How to affix it to the backing without damage?

Great idea! I would like to know too if anyone has any ideas about how to do this properly.

Happy New Year!

There are two ways to do this IMHE. One is to have a series of shelves inside the shadow box. The items rest on the shelves, usually with some sort of plate holder. The other is paperweight shaped boxes where a hook holds the item.

There is also always the glass topped coffee table with silver displayed beneath.

Another idea for displaying small silver items is an old store display case. This one is a Cadbury Chocolates case that my wife found at a house sale. It is really too big to hang on the wall – but it stores more objects.

Hi -
as I want to see parts of my collections I designed some "exhibition furnitures". So I have the possibility to change several times a year. Here are some pics:

Very nice.

Personally, I use shoe boxes, but that's just the kind of guy I am.

I dunno, wev, I think you should at least consider upgrading to mahogany shoe boxes.

Postnikov -- I think that's fabulous. I have a very different, and smaller, collection, and I only bring out a few pieces at a time....mostly because I worry about theft. But how wonderful to be able to view it all together!

And also a good learning experience...I think by contemplating differences among multiple pieces, you discover things in terms of connoisseurship and scholarship.

Thank you for sharing awht and Postnikov.

Postnikov- I love your long vitrine piece; such a wonderful way to display your silver. And I am envious of your fitted drawers filled with silver. Great storage!

I found a vintage demilune display cabinet with a mirrored back. Good size and could be tucked in anywhere really. Mine is on a short wall in the hall, but it faces my main living room,so everyone can enjoy the display. I think the clear and mirrored glass along with the sparkling silver makes a pleasing effect and I can easily change out pieces for a new look and the cabinet helps slow down tarnish.

I look forward to see how other people exhibit and enjoy their silver.

I am also a box-man very large boxes around. That is not including the newer pieces that lay among all the scrap paper & books etc at my table.

In fact so much in boxes that wife bought a glass cabinet from the 1930ties baroque style - I shall update this post with 2 pictures later today. 1 with picture of my box and 1 of my wife's baroque style cabinet that she bought for me. (and sorry to say most still stored in boxes smile

The problem for a collector is - to much stuff and to little space.

And Postnikov - that display I envy you your order.

The vifes cabinet that she bought for me. So I must obey.

My grandfather made this for his wedding in 1907. He was a furniture maker. For the last few years I have had the ambition to place it at the wall - Its only part of the buffet. My sister has the rest - and she urges me to collect the rest. baroque spoons are almost hanging.

A man got to do what a man got to do - and that is not exhibition.

You people have such elegant display cabinets!

I put my silver in drawers in my dining-room sideboard or in book cases in front of the books. I would love to have room for entire display cabinets just for silver!
