This is a number 3 thimble (just over ½” high) with a nursery rhyme inscribed on the side. The cow, cat and dog are all there. I never did understand why the dish ran away with the spoon.

This is a child’s napkin ring holder and I would say that the King’s nose was pecked off.
I suspect that there are many silver objects with nursery rhymes on them.

I'm curious. Why would a thimble have a nursery rhyme theme? Was it for junior seamstresses?

The small thimble with the nursery rhyme must have been intended for a budding seamstress.
The large thimble on the left must have been used by a wild seamstress given the number of holes that have been poked in the side.

Good morning all.

Holes in thimbles were to let moisture, (sweat) be released.

Back in the day teaching children home skills such as sewing.....example: samplers etc. it was very important in preparing a young lady for her future homemaking duties. Even today there are schools that teach the young to sew, some start as early as 2 & 3. Remember those boards with a picture & holes, they are still out there today....you thread the yarn through it to complete the picture.
Hope this helps.

My wife collected a few baby rattlers when our children were young. The one above was a gift to Jebba from Mortie. The stylized engraving always intrigued me as did the names themselves.
With the number of dents in the silver this rattler was clearly used by a child to past the time of day and to amuse the adults.

    Goosey, goosey, gander,
    Whither shall I wander?
    Upstairs and downstairs
    And in my lady’s chamber
There I met an old man
Who would not say his prayers.
I took him by the left leg
And threw him down the stairs.

This version somehow merged with “Old father long legs” and perhaps referred to the death of Cardinal Beaton.

Interesting things are given to children.

My wife found the rattlers below many years ago and by chance both had lost their coral. I can remember visiting several shops looking for just the right piece of coral to restore them to their original beauty. Sometime after our search and repair of what we thought were appropriate and beautiful coral inserts we discovered that the coral originally used was plain, short and smooth. The coral apparently was used for teething and long fancy coral stems just were not used. I would not recommend that a baby be allowed to handle these rattlers no matter what type of coral is used.

The mark for George Unite of Birmingham, England is on the large rattler while the small one is unmarked.
