HI,

I hope some one can help me figure out if this is silver or not?

I love lions so when I found this at a yard sale I had to get it I was told it was pure silver. Is there even a such thing?

Lets start with what it looks like.. It looks like this would be a candle holder or maybe something for the dinner table not really sure. It is a set of two. Stands 2cm short of 3 inches. the top stands to a 1 1/2 inch opening which has a 1/2 inch lip that has design on all the around the edge. Then on each side it has a lion face carved in detail biting down on a ring, I would think they would be like little handles. Plus it is a little heavy.

The only thing missing is markings there is nothing no where on this thing. Very pretty and detailed but no maker, no year.

I would like to know where this could be from?

How old it might be? and Is it really silver?

It looks like silver. I have lots of silver things, but all of them have some form of markings to identify the maker or designer or age. Never saw silver without some form of mark some where!!

I wish I could figure out how to show you the pictures to help. Ok I think I figured out the photo thing!! smile

Just yesterday I found a heavy toothpick holder with lions with the ring in their mouths.... it was marked Viners of Sheffield silverplated on the base. The information hunt is half the fun of collecting eh?

Yeah, I never thought about it being a toothpick holder but you know that just might be what it is. It would be the perfect size for tooth picks. I did see I big ice bucket with a design that is almost exact. The only thing is mine has no marks like others larger designs I saw.

In most cases if it is not marked silver or with hallmarks then it is unlikely to be silver. In most cases such a thing would be either silver plated or made of a silver colored alloy often marketed as German Silver which has no actual silver in it - it is nickle/copper alloy.

Venus!
A little late but I think this was/is for cigarettes, although toothpicks would work OK too.

Just spotted this same item for sale on Bob Vila's website. He's not really sure what to call it for it says urn or toothpick holder. Here is his description of it:
quote:
"Description: Offering this wonderful silver plated urn or toothpick holder, with two ornate lions heads handles. Top edge has a rope design. Measures 3" tall x 2 1/2" wide. Marked on bottom "Viners of Sheffield, England, silver plate". Good condition, no dents or dings. A couple dark specks on one side and on inside lip. Neither detract from this lovely piece of Sheffield. What a great garden urn this would make for your doll house garden or fill w/ potpourri, toothpicks, many possibilities!"

IMHE usually urns like this were part of a smoking set. This consisted of a tray, a lighter and a cigarett holder. Sometimes there was an ashtray with it, sometimes not. Over the years the pieces went their own ways. The lighter broke and was thrown out. The tray became a relish server. The urn a toothpick holder.

Marking on smoking sets is erratic. Because some were sold by tobacconists, some were premiums with labels, some were given away. Which means at best paper labels. Or being part of a gift box with tobacco and so forth.

Very nice little item. If you want to devote some serious time to silver research, watch old movies on AMC. In the films of the 30's and 40's all sorts of silver shows up and is used. The smoking set was big with Bette Davis, she used them a lot.

I have seen cigarette urns in this form in the past, but about five to seven years ago I was given one that appears to be identical to this one by a co-worker for Christmas. It was heavy for it's size, and was new at the time. It was sold as a candleholder, and came with a gold foil Made in China sticker on the bottom. I don't have it here at home but on my desk at work. I'll take a look at it Tuesday and verify it.

The only difference I see in mine is that mine has a beaded rim, rather than a gadroon one. The foil label says "Made in China for CBK LTD LLC"
