Hi all -

found 3 sifters from Equist, Carl Gustav, a silversmith working in St. Petersburg about 1850. What a joy to use them.

How wonderful!

I have a very similar implement, with a pear-shaped bowl and a twig handle, with the mark of Martin Mayer of Mainz, which I bought from Richard a couple of years ago--he believed it was a tea strainer. But the holes are a little too small for that. Surface tension makes the tea stay in the bowl for much longer than you'd expect. I will try using it as a sugar sifter instead.

I'll post photos tomorrow after the sun comes out.

I found pictures I took a while ago on my computer:

Do you know more about the history of this form?

Hi -

The firm Martin Mayer in Mainz, founded 1888, is wellknown for its quality. They produced designs by Peter Behrens, Hans Christiansen and Patriz Huber.

I think these apple- or pear-twig shaped sifters were just a mode of that time - you can find them in many countries, starting in France.
Very nice exemplar!

Thank you, Postnikov.

What sort of fruit is the bowl of the sifter in the far right? Is it a chestnut? Some other kind of nut?

I'd guess a cabbage leaf.
