Yesterday the Silver Salon Forums sending e-mail function was hacked by Internet SPAMmers (the bad guys). We believe it was only a sending of SPAM hack and all SSF users IDs were NOT bothered.

When this happened our ISP shut down the Forums. We have taken steps to stop yesterday’s source from doing this again. We are awaiting input from our ISP about the exact technical nature of the hack. This info would help us to craft a fix to prevent this from happen from a new source.

Would this explain why I was unable to get into this forum a few hours ago? My attempts to open it were met with a box requesting me to log in with user name and password. I tried a number of times, trying several passwords (it'd been so long, I'd forgotten which I used). None got me in.

Yes. We created a unique ID/password to protect the Forums while we shut out the SPAMmer's access and then we inspected things. When we were reasonably sure nothing other then sending email had been compromised; was when we implemented the steps to shut the SPAMmer out and then we removed the unique ID/password.

Thanks once again for all the work you do, Scott, June, and the moderators, to keep this unique site on the air. It is a fascinating and rare place.

My thanks also Scott for all the effort and time that it takes to run this wonderful forum.
I really wonder why spammers would want to hack this site. Maybe it was for the practice of doing it.

There are lots of reasons... the most common is the Bad Guy is doing viral advertising/graffiti (frequently porn, Amazon, blogs, etc.) or Bad Guy is sending SPAM invisibly so we get blamed for originating the SPAM.
