Behind the scenes SSF Site changes

Over the past few weeks we have been busy making small behind the scenes code fixes and improvements. Hopefully we have not introduced any new problems. Please let us know if you see a problem.

We have also been very busy identifying the source of the SPAM robots. This is probably a never ending battle but right now we have shut down robot access from several 1000 sites. This number will continue to grow. Most are from the Philippines, Russia, Ukraine, Seychelles, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, France, Moldova, Netherlands, Georgia, Thailand, UK, USA, and others.... eek

If your ISP is also hosting (knowingly or unknowingly) one of the robots it is possible that your computer/IP will get blocked accessing the SSF. You will know you are blocked from the SSF if you are able get to the www.SMPub.com site but when you try to get to http://www.smpub.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi you get a message like:

    403 Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi on this server.

If this happens, please email us and we will create a special access permission for your computer/IP.

Please make note of the above.

As of today we are blocking over 41,000 IP/computer addresses. If your ISP is (knowingly or unknowingly) hosting a robot then you might find yourself blocked from the SSF.

If this happens to you please email us and we will take steps to remove the block for your IP/computer.

The majority of the blocks are international site (i.e., China, Russia, Germany). But there are more and more USA sites hosting robots mad

Before we started blocking the IPs/computers the fake SPAM registrations were as high as 25 to 30 (occasionally more) a day.

Since we started blocking these IPs/computers the fake SPAM registrations have dropped to 0-1 a day.

The robots that are trying to post SPAM on public forums just keep coming... We've lost count of all the IPs/computers/nets we are blocking. Our guess is over 120,000. Right now most are from China, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Brazil, Seychelles, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Republic of Korea, France, Latvia, Germany, Sweden, UK & US.

Some of these are large server farms and others are infected personal computers that are apart of a Botnet. Please make sure your virus software is up to date and use a DNS that is set to keep you from inadvertently surfing to a bad site which will infect your computer with a Rootkit Bot just by landing on the site.

Scott,
Today I had an email from what appeared to be a Swedish bank. Perhaps that is a part of what you are talking about? As I can't read Swedish, I deleted it.

Geoff,

SPAM email comes from all over the world.

I can assure you the email you got didn't come from or through the Silver Salon Forums.

If you want you may send me the email including the headers and I'll see what else might be learned.
