[01-3043]

We recently went to Atlanta and celebrated my wife’s birthday. It was one of those big birthdays ending in a zero. One night we had birthday cake in the hotel restaurant and by chance several of the former paratroopers of “The Triple Nickles” and their families had dinner at the table next to us. We offered them some of the birthday cake my wife’s cousin made. It was a very delicious caramel cake that my wife’s cousin made using their grandmother’s recipe.

Caramel cake was also one of their favorites and after dessert the son of one of the soldiers gave my wife the medallion pictured above. His father was in his early 90s, had served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion or "The Triple Nickles" became our nation's first all-black parachute infantry battalion in 1944. This Battalion was disbanded in 1947 and the members were transferred to the newly integrated 505th Parachute Infantry Battalion of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Segregation in the military for black paratroopers ended at this time by order of Maj. Gen. James Gavin. President Truman ended segregation for all military personnel a short time later by Executive Order 9981.

It was obvious that the soldiers from “The Triple Nickles” were having a great time at their reunion and also that these paratroopers, even after 68 years from the initiation of their battalion, were still in remarkable good health. Jumping out of airplanes must be good for one’s health. It was a great pleasure for us to meet them and to hear some of their stories.

Very cool!

I second the request for the recipe, if it's not a family secret.

My wife has a call in to her cousin for the recipe. We usually buy caramel cakes made in Clanton, Al. My wife's cousin owned a restaurant at one time knows quite a bit about cooking and baking.

By the way....

There is a book out by "Tiger" Ted Lowry, a former boxer who was in that elite group of paratroopers. He also was the only fighter to go the entire 10 rounds twice with Rocky Marciano. They later became friends as well!

The book is called God's in my corner!
