I have some candlesticks with the mark El-Sil-Co in a diamond, which I understand is associated with Elgin.

The references I've seen online and in Rainwater say this company operated as Ludwig & Redlich and later as Redlich & Co until purchased by Elgin Silversmith Co in 1946.

Here's my question: Did Elgin Silversmith and this diamond mark exist before 1946? Put another way, can that mark be taken as proof that the candlesticks are 1946 or later? Online resources and sellers seem to think so, but the language ("purchased by"/"taken over by") suggests maybe not.

I do not know the answer and I am watching this thread in hopes that someone does know and I can learn about it.

My sense of logic, though, suggests to me that the marking would not occur before the takeover. Also, given what other silver makers (and glass makers and other such companies) seem to have done with their take overs is that Elgin might not have immediately stopped selling under the Redlich & Co name or selling Redlich patterns in the first year of the takeover since I would think that Elgin might have seen a benefit having another trademark to sell under for a while before converting over. This is just a guess though and I hope that someone who knows will come along.

Kimo--Your instincts seem to be right. Rainwater says that the Redlich name (and mark) continued after the takeover "up until this day," which I take to mean the 1966 first publication date of the guide -- which would mean at least another 20 years.
