I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction in terms of identifying these spoons. Flatware of this era ain't my usual thing, so I'm pretty much clueless. These are family pieces that I'm giving to my niece for Christmas, and I'd love to be able to tell her something about them.

I apologize for the bad quality of the image -- a scanner photo was all I could manage today. But the design is distinctive, and I hope that's enough. The bowls are paneled. Two spoons out of the six total are marked "Pat. 1895." The marks are rubbed, but I can make out "925 [bar] 000" and Sterling (why would they have both?). There is also a maker's mark that I can't make out, as it's rubbed. It appears to be a script letter within a lozenge or cartouche frame but I really don't know. If someone has a suggestion for the maker, I would probably be able to confirm the mark by comparing it across several spoons. I would guess that the spoons were made or retailed in New England or New York.

Towle's 'Old Colonial', in production for at least a century, that shape with the paneled bowl is instantly recognizable, older pieces typically marked as you describe...

There are old catalogs from 1898 & 1910 available (reprints/CD's) on the Internet.

Cheryl and Scott -- Thank you, thank you! And Scott, special thanks for posting the image of the marks, which exactly conform to what I see here.

Merry Christmas!

Oh, and Towle is pronounced like toll (rhymes with bowl). Rob Butler once giggled at me for pronouncing it like towel (rhymes with owl), the mean mean man.

Merry Christmas!

He giggled? In these circumstances, that's probably even worse than a guffaw.

Speaking of pronunciations......

Am I correct that "Crichton" is pronounced "CRY-tin"? (CRY rhyming with "Tie")

(ages ago, I had a dictionary that included a "Pronouncing Gazeteer" for names...very handy)

YouTube has a pronunciation. It sounds the same as "cry" as in Julie London's song "Cry me a river".
