That was supposed to have the explanation that this chalice is on display at the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. I was not able to get out there for the opening of the show but I hope my nephew was able to go. He said he would try.

Thank you, one and all, for your kind comments on my work. When I asked our minister, Reverend Han, if I might borrow the chalice for the show, he said, "Of course, you made it." I told him that, yes, I had made it but I had given it to the church so I had to ask for his permission to borrow it for a few months.
Scott, I hadn't thought about perhaps some work coming from this showing. You might be right.

Geoff, that is a magnificent chalice. What is the bit under the cup made of, wood?

June,
That is called the node and is made from blood wood, an African wood also called sanguineria ( or some spelling like that). The bowls I made to go with the chalice have bases made from blood wood. That is the color of the wood, I just used a little tung oil on it.

The common name bloodwood is used for a number of completely different species of trees around the world. If this is from Africa then it is most likely Pterocarpus angolensis which is a strange tree in that the sap has a reddish color and the sapwood - the part of the tree that is nearer to the outside has a reddish brown color wood. What is even stranger is that when you cut the tree down, the sap starts to ooze out of the sapwood onto the lighter color wood in the inner part of the tree and it makes it look like the tree is bleeding. I have seen this myself in countries in southern Africa. The inner wood is often sold by the common name African teak since it has a similar light brown color to real teak.

Kimo,
I used the name blood wood because that is what the hard wood dealer I purchased it from said it was. I believe that is where the mention of it being from Africa came from. Beyond that I know nothing about which specific tree it came from except that I , elsewhere, heard the French name , but that may actually apply to a different species of tree.
