I don't have smartphone nor do I use social media ..... so I don't know much.

It was suggested that the Silver Salon Forums create an Instagram account.

So this has been done: Silver Salon Forums Instagram account.

Now What?

I thought you didn't like social media on principle, Scott? Did I misunderstand?

I don't like it. Especially for all the security risks to the individual.

Nevertheless, the young and the unaware of the security issues are using Social Media. So, even if I'm not comfortable enough....if SSF members are comfortable with Instagram and it helps us do a better job of education and bringing others into our community, I'll help.

I use Instagram with my children and grandchildren as it is a very easy way to post pictures. I really don't understand the economics of it as there are no commercials on it. Maybe just following the pictures one posts has some monetary value.

I still don't have a smartphone....

It was looking like I couldn't manage our SSF account on Instagram without a smartphone until I found the Android emulator BlueStacks.

I did sign up to be a follower.

I am not an expert in either Facebook or Instagram, but I think Facebook may be better suited for this Forum.

I am associated with several nonprofits that use Facebook to post what is going on, etc. and the advantage to Facebook is you can share the posts with your friends. The non-profit or business gets a multiplier effect with this sharing as nonmembers of the Forum see the information on their timeline.

Others may know more about than me and maybe it would be good to hear from them.

Years ago we created the beginnings of a FB presence hoping those members who use FB would jump in. .... not much has ever happen.

I don't use FB. So it will have to be guided by those who do. I haven't a clue what to do.

OK we have SSF on Instagram. Now what do members want to do?

  • What photos should be on Instagram?
  • What Instagram hashtags to use?
  • Should we tailor some of our own Instagram hashtags:
For example: Start the tag with ssf_
    #ssf_whatzit
    #ssf_greatfaces
    #ssf_Ephemera
    etc., etc.
  • Who should we follow?
  • What else should we do with Instagram?

I use Instagram to take pictures of things, places, people and the like and share them with my children and grandchildren. I also occasionally share short videos. All the pictures and videos that I share are taken with an IPhone or IPad, but there may be other says to upload these.

For the forum, I could see its use for instantly sharing a photo of an interesting silver object that I see at an antique shop or show. I have taken pictures at shows for my own use and the dealers seem to like my interest.

The pictures I take with an IPhone would not be as good as I take when a camera is sitting on a tripod, but for the most part they are clear enough.

Other people may have better ideas.

I used an un-associated email with Instagram. Once I clicked on a couple of Instagram images with the hashtag #silver, Amazon started sending me info on books about silver.

After years with no silver info coming to the email address from Amazon .... its pretty clear Instagram makes money selling info about you and your related photo searches/looks.

The "monetary value" is your private info and interests.

I will leave it to others to decide whether this is good or bad for them. Private and the internet just are incompatible with each other.

Hmmm....my first instinct is that Instagram is not the best media match for us. And if we forum members end up being the primary followers of the account, what's the point?

I think Scott is to be commended for being open-minded to social media and other forms of Internet presence. But I have often observed in other situations that the best cross-applications occur when someone who is actively involved in one form of social media sees a great match with something else they are involved in.

My sense....I wouldn't force it. But maybe someone else here who uses Instagram or something else (Pinterest maybe?)more frequently than I do can make recommendations.

Actually, Instagram (and Pinterest) remind me of a very frustrating Real World experience I had today. I wandered into a shop I hadn't visited for some time, someone who is well known as a silver dealer. Objects were sitting on shelves. There were no identification tags (let alone prices). Nothing. One would have to be an expert to discern if a piece was American, English, Scottish, whatever. And pretty much no way to discern who the makers were (at least for us ordinary mortals). I am often annoyed with this shop, but was even more so today.

The point of this overly long post is that if we want to extend beyond this forum, I think we need to find a cyber venue that combines images with information.

I personally don't want to play with the Social Media sites.

This doesn't mean I won't help members create an SSF presence (its just not something I want to do regularly).

So if members want to take the lead let us know.

Based on the info I am able to extract from G there are over 34,692 links to us from pinterest.com. These links are coming 6,895 Pinterest accounts (which I have in a spread sheet). It appears Pinterest is the Social Media sweet spot

Search engines have a "images" button that often pick up images from this site and provide a link to the Forum.

It really is pretty amazing what one can see on the internet. I was talking to a friend this morning who lost his smart phone. He went to Google Maps and put in his telephone number and located it on the map. It also had information as to where the phone had been for some time period in the past.

Without serious volunteers.... this is going to languish.

I understand. For most, Silver is a passion. The SSF is a passing pleasure that compliments the Silver passion. There is only so much time and volunteering is a commitment.

If I didn't have other issues ... I couldn't spend as much time as I do at with the SSF. So I really do understand.

Scott, I have been on Instagram for 4 months. It gives a visual window on my world and many others. That is, as a craftsman, I get to see an increadable amount of work/ideas in a very short time. Also I have been using it to connect to other silversmiths and through them where they show and sell. I hope in the future to use it more. I really do not care/worry about my "information" I am pretty much an open book with only unpaid parking tickets to worry about. I may be wrong about that but then I may be mugged or hit by a bus...

I need to think about SSF and how Instagram might help and how I could contribute.
