Use a milky or white plastic tub ... it makes an inexpensive Light Box. (see: New camera-need suggestions)

Use "daylight" bulbs (4600K or more) for example:

Most every digital 'point & shoot' cameras have a Macro (close up) setting.

Because every manufacturer may do it differently so please read your camera's manual on how to use the macro feature. Generally most cameras use the following flower symbol to indicate macro:

A tripod can prove very helpful. Even a small tabletop tripod....use it like you would a 'selfie' stick to hold the camera steady.

Setting the camera at a very high resolution can also help when using a photo editor (software) to crop and enlarge the marks.

If you are using a light box remember to turn off the automatic flash.

If your camera has 'image stabilization system' turned it on to minimize camera shake.

Macro photography can become a very large topic. Keeping it simple with a 'Point & Shoot' camera should be what we examine.

I also have heard that an iPhone may be set to do some extreme close ups --- as close as 4 inches ....

Great post, good advice here.

I just got an iPhone 6S and the camera is incredible. The Richard Blanchard mark was taken with it.
