![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The question is whether we should allow image "hot linking"?
Bandwidth theft or "hot linking" is direct linking to another web site's files (images, video, etc.). An example would be an auction site, blog, Not SMP/SSF web page, etc. showing our photos from one of your posts as if the photos belong to them/their site. Bandwidth refers to the amount of data transferred from a web site to a user's computer. When the other site shows our photos on their web page, they are using our bandwidth to display the photo. Since web hosts charge based on the amount of data transferred, bandwidth is an issue. If a site is over its monthly bandwidth, it's billed for the extra data or taken offline. A simple analogy for bandwidth theft: Imagine a random stranger plugging into your electrical outlets, using your electricity without your consent, and you paying for it. Right now, I do next to nothing about "hot linking". The exception being when time permits and I need a mental distraction I sift through the logs trying to ID "hot linking". Because doing this is very time consuming and not really helpful I don't do this often. When I see our images "hot linked" on another site I edit the image (on our site) to include our "www.SMPub.com". The photo edit also takes more of my time. Using (learning how to) our server technology to stop image "hot linking" could save us bandwidth but at the same time it could also cut down on referrals. There are other issues some known and others will be learned the hard way. What is your opinion? IP: Logged |
