The family that won the following trophies is very large and goes back many generations. Over time they lost track of the 3 trophies shown below. The present family hasn't any real understanding of how the trophies ended up in auction a few years ago.

Recently while trying to update their family history they discovered the trophies were no longer in their possession. They have been unable to determine who has possession now and would like to reach out to the current owners.

Confidentiality prevents the auction houses from saying anything.

Any ideas?

Scott- The auction house ethically should not disclose who sold nor who bought these items without consent. The auction house could open the conversation with the new owners stating that there is a party interested in acquiring these items. If the new owner were interested, The auction house could broker a deal while maintaining both buyer and sellers confidentiality.

The issue here would be dealing with an auction house that cares enough to help.....good luck with that.

Another approach would be to file a police report for stolen property. If the family did not know they were missing until the items showed up at auction, then it would be reasonable to file a report. This could stem an investigation revealing the seller....maybe help determine if it were a family member that went rogue.

I totally agree with Vetdaddy's suggestions. I might add that it could have been some rogue family member who may not have had full ownership, unless they were specifically mentioned in a will as being given to that particular family member, or it could also have been some person just stealing them - either an inside job (more likely in my thinking) or a random thief who burgled the house. In any event, if the family has not already done so they should immediately contact both their local police and the auction house that sold these advising the auction house that they have filed a stolen property report and that they will be looking into their legal options against the auction house.

One additional possibility is that the owners were getting on in age and found they were in need of money and so began secretly selling off family heirlooms so they could keep up their lifestyle. This is not at all uncommon and typically the people do not tell their family or future heirs out of embarrassment or just plain feeling it is nobody's business but their own.
