![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I just learned that I may be the only person on the planet who still fixes wax candlesticks in candleholders using the old technique of lighting an old candle stub and dripping wax into the holder, and then quickly setting the new stick in place. A friend recently showed me two products she uses: Stick-Um, and Biedermann Wax Candle Adapters. Stick-Um comes in a flat tin and looks like white paste --you just dab the end of the candlestick in it. The Biederman adapters come in a package of little soft sticky dots that you place in the holder before jamming the stick in. Stick-Um says it washes off with soap and water. Any downside to using these products? Wondering especially about the effect on old candlesticks and if there is any issue with residue left over time. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We wrap a circular white sponge that is about 1/8 inch thick and about one inch in diameter around the bottom of the candle. When the candle is inserted the sponge compresses just enough to hold the candle in place. If the gap is really big we use two sponges. We brought these in a local gift shop. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Doc -- Bless you! You give me great comfort -- especially as a good friend who is a also a silver nut just told me she's been using Stick-Um for years. The thing with the sponge and the Martha techniques (thanks for suggesting them)is that the candle isn't fixed (except for Martha's offhand comment on the first one about 'clay'). I worry about someone -- who knows how -- knocking a lit candle over. So I like the idea of something sticking it in place. There are of course, two ways to think of candles -- for display or for actual use during a dinner. The sponge/Martha techniques would be fine for me for display. I'm going to give these products a try. Wondering if there is anything I should worry about relative to using them on unimportant silver holders versus holders I care about. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seaduck, none of these will harm good silver. The only thing that does harm removing wax or these products is using something harder than silver - a screw driver, knife and the like. If one is in a hurry and can't use boiling water and a soft cloth then at least make soft wood or plastic your scraper and still be gentle. And I know I'm talking to others here not the regulars... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rather than melting an old candle stub into the socket, or using some kind of glue or padding, I simply hold a lighted match or lighter to the base of the new candle for about 2 seconds - just enough to get a tiny bit of melted wax and then quickly set it into the candle stick holding it in place for the couple of seconds it takes for the slightly melted surface of the candle base to harden.
