I brought this butter knife in the Kings pattern this weekend because of the worn markings. I have looked, but have not come up with who or when it was made. The letter n looks like a date mark, but it is spaced so far from the rest of the marks that I think it must mean something else. The piece looks and feels like solid silver, but I have been fooled before so I really do not know what it is.

Any ideas what this is?

Nice find, I love the mystery!
Chinese export, Malta, India those are my guesses...

The cross is used in the marking for silver from Malta. I will follow up that lead.

Those look a lot like British electroplate marks to me - with the crown, prior to the late 1890s (1897?), when its use was banned on silverplate...

I think you are right Cheryl. This maker also added a cross for extra confusion, but the cross used is really not the same as those I have seen on silver from Malta.
Nevertheless the butter knife is well made and we will enjoy it.

@Cheryl, as usual, that makes so much sense! Bother I am always so excited by unknown marks.... on sterling or coin.

The "crown" (3rd from right) and the symbol between that and the JC mark were both used c1900 by William Page & Co. of Birmingham on electroplate, but with WP in a crown or a lozenge (diamond). So maybe a combination of marks from maker and retailer or another contributor to the finished goods?

Thanks adelapt. I wonder in anyone in 1900 thought we would be searching for this company in 2017.
