Internet privacy whether its your phone, tablet, laptop or PC is really too big a topic for Silver Salon Forums. The discussion is also most likely too technical for most people.

The Internet privacy issues begin with who/the company(ISP) you get your Internet service access from. Most ISP's in one way or another collect and sell info about your Internet activities. The value of this info, how the selling of it invades your personal privacy and that it ultimately (& transparently) causes you and everyone harm is also too big a topic for the Silver Salon Forums. There are lots of YouTube videos that explain the basics of what DNS does to convert www.smpub.com to 96.230.49.51.

Even with the above, there is stuff you can do. Beginning with the topic covered in another SSF thread: Beware - FCC Plans December Vote to Kill Net Neutrality Rules.

Another thing you can do is to avoid using your ISP's provided DNS or another's DNS which collects info (i.e, Google). There are dozens of "Free" DNS services. Each "Free" DNS comes with features and caveats. Some "Free" DNS might even be worse than your ISP provided DNS. And others can provide significant benefits, like keeping you from getting Malware or viruses.

Why these DNS services are free one needs to ask themselves. It cost money to operate a DNS service.

There is a new "Free" DNS that might prove to be a good free service. Its called Quad9 DNS service and is being provided by IBM and a consortium of others. It may be they are providing the "Free" DNS service because it is good PR and that by having a healthy Internet, it will sell more computers/phones/computer services..... I'm not sure how they cover their operational costs.

IBM, Packet Clearing House (PCH) and the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA) announced the official launch of the new Quad9 DNS service on Nov.16

quote:
The new Domain Name System (DNS) service offered by Quad9 - a nonprofit founded by IBM Security, Packet Clearing House (PCH) and The Global Cyber Alliance - is free to use and takes only a minute to set up. Quad9's DNS promises to check websites visited by users against the IBM X-Force threat intelligence database, as well as 18 additional databases, and will detect and automatically block access to known malicious websites.

Moreover, Quad9 promises not to collect, store or sell any information about your browsing habits - protections that would have been standard in the US anyway, had Congress and the White House not already sold out the American consumer.
