I came across this interesting box recently, or at least I thought it was interesting as it showed how silver was marketed in times past. Lady Doris was a silver plate pattern by International Silver and you could buy a service for one person for $2.00 without completed books. Perhaps one could fill books with coupons and obtain a discount with completed books or if you had enough books get the service free of charge.

When I was growing up eagle stamps were given out by department stores and completed books were used by all to get something free. This may have been the same idea. I think today the cash back credit card fulfills a similar role in forming our habits.
