Adopting Polly's conversion table, I bought this intriguing lamp a few days ago for a better sandwich and a slice of pie. It was listed as silverplate, but I have checked very carefully and find no evidence that it is not silver. It is unmarked except for a F stamped on the inside. The workmanship is quite good and there is a handsome late Victorian mono on the top. I presume it is a microscope lamp or something of that nature. The candle holder is spring loaded and the base shaft telescopes 4 inches. The opening measures 2 1/2 by 4 inches and has the original glass plate. I particularly like the little mailbox like vesta box on the back side. On the inside of the lid is a swiveling pair of very sharp hooks (he says, applying a band aide to his finger tip) likely for hanging it on something.

Has anyone seem the likes before?

How very intriguing! I want there to be a patent date and number hiding in some inner corner.

A few years ago (maybe 10+) I saw something that might be considered similar. I really wanted to buy it but the seller had just sold it to Richard K.

I really don't remember the specifics but I believe it had a lens. Perhaps Richard still has it and could refresh my memory with a few photos.

WEV that's a really great find -- I love it.

I have looked over every bit, hoping the same, but except for the mono and the capital F stamp, nothing. I have tried some patent searches, but without knowing just what to call it, I have had no luck.

It is very cool, whatever its origin.

Is he still active?

This just has plain glass. It is slightly wavy, with tiny air bubbles cast in, which leads me to believe it is original or at least cut from old stock.

I found a spot on a turned edge that was a scrapped back and it looks like the body at least is silverplated copper. If the lid isn't solid, it is heavily plated as the mono is strongly cut and I see no base metal showing.

I found a candle stub that fit nicely and it throws a nice amount of light for its size.

That is super cool! I love the monogram and like you say, it definitely has the look of sterling. Perhaps you could have it X-Rayed?

Great find!

wev,
Rumors of my inactivity have been greatly exaggerated.
( But my doctor does keep telling me to move around more.)

Scott,
I still have that thing somewhere, but I think pictures of it have already been posted.
