You probably noticed this new forum for silver jewelry. Since the occasional question about a piece of jewelry came up, we thought it might be a good idea to try a separate forum for the subject. Hopefully it will be oft-used, so if anybody has any questions, go ahead and post them. Here are a few guidelines...

  • Silver/silverplate jewelry is preferred, but since gold is also a precious metal, occasional questions about gold jewelry are also acceptable.
  • Please...no costume jewelry! There are other web-based services for that.
  • Questions don't necessarily have to be about an actual piece of jewelry...perhaps somebody has a question about other related topics (e.g. making jewelry, repairing jewelry, etc.)
  • Images with questions always make the question easier to answer...go to http://www.smpub.com/ubb/ubbcode.html for more info on posting pictures and more ways to enhance your posts.

To get started, here's a question: why collect jewelry? Why not? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages to this field of collecting? I will post my own reasons later this afternoon. I am interested in hearing others' comments; feel free to illustrate with anecdotes or stories as well.

For me, the best aspect of collecting jewelry is the ability to wear your collection. I have always thought that this lends a special dimension to jewelry collecting that other areas just can't -- it is possible to display other things, but very few collections are as mobile as jewelry. After all, it goes where the wearer goes. Most other types of collections, you have to go to where the collections are physically located in order to see them.

Silver jewelry has always struck me as being particularly interesting as it tends to be more affordable than many other types of jewelry (although there are certainly plenty of very expensive silver jewelry pieces) and the variety is huge. This is a metal that has been used for jewelry for centuries, and across all types of civilizations. The different styles and designs are close to infinite. And each piece tells its own story, in terms of the craftsmanship, the design work, the fads of the time in which it was made, the geographic region in which the maker was located. Sometimes all of this is a mystery, which just makes it more fascinating to try and solve.

All this and beauty too! Who could ask for more?

Here are some of my own ideas about collecting jewelry.

Pros

  • Variety--It's seemingly endless, as Cheryl pointed out. Just when you think you've found the 'neatest' piece, something better turns up. Also, there are styles and trends for every taste. The smaller size probably made such variety possible--jewelry artisans might not have attempted certain designs on a large scale, yet jewelry's size fosters experimentation, especially when working with silver, which is relatively cheap.
  • Amount--Jewelry has been made in such large amounts that nearly every flea market, antique show and sale has some to offer.
  • Available resources--A collector of jewelry has a great number of fine reference available, from general guides for novices to more scholarly texts. One can begin by gleaning general knowledge from books like Warman's Jewelry as a means of entering the field, and move on the more advanced works (I will post a list of recommended reading in a week or so).
  • Size--this makes having a collection of hundreds of pieces of jewelry more feasible than a similarly-sized furniture collection, for instance.

Cons

  • Size--This is also a disadvantage; the great value placed on such small objects makes it a primary target for theives. And many pieces just can't be replaced.
  • Reproductions--Jewelry is constantly being faked; one has to be careful not to be taken in by unscrupulous or unknowing dealers who are offering cheap knock-offs.

These are what I can think of off the top of my head; I'm sure there are many more.
