I picked up this strange little object a couple of weeks ago, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me any more about it. It measures about 2 1/4" long by 1/3/4" wide, and is a thick, heavy chunk of silver. It has two holes, one on either side of the neck area. If you thread a cord through the holes and under the "chin", it makes a nice, if heavy pendant. It may not be jewelry at all, though.

I know very little about Latin American silver, and I was hoping one of our readers might be able to identify this character, or at least the culture that produced it. It has a decent amount of wear that does not look faked, but I have no idea how old it really is. There is not much wear around the holes, so if it was worn as a pendant it wasn't worn very much. Still, it intrigues me. Does this look like a tourist item? Are things like this being produced today? If so, by whom?

Any information, especially as to the identity of the culture that it belongs to, would be very welcome. Guesses are fine; that's all I have myself!

Unfortunately, I'm not too knowledgeable on this type of silver. I suspect the piece is South American. The figure looks Aztec or Inca--but I'm not too well versed in these cultures' symbolism so this is mere speculation. The holes are kind of mysterious...I'm not exactly sure what they're for. They could be for a chain...but that would mean the maker expected either the chain's endrings to be small enough to fit through them, or the owner to remove the chain's endring, slip the chain through, then replace the ring. They don't look big enough to accept most chain findings, but I can't really tell from the picture--so I expect it probably wasn't a pendant. Perhaps it has some kind of ceremonial use? I see there don't seem to be any marks...another suggestion that this might not have been made for the export/tourist market. Perhaps the holes are to allow the piece to be nailed or tacked onto something else--a wooden tablet, or something.
