Any ideas about what this is? It is a container of some kind (matches?), with an opening on one side at the top. It looks to be something that might have hung from a chatelaine. It is about 2.5" long, and marked with standard Gorham marks and "7". The inscription is also mysterious to me. One side features a monogram, no mystery there. But the other side has the word "NEIGHBORS" (in Japanese style script) and the date 1891 engraved. I am unsure what this means. One idea I had was that it could be the name of some theatrical piece, of which this silver container would have been a souvenir. Any further speculation? Hi! I think it is a pin cushion. I am fairly certain that I have seen these with velvet inserts to hold pins. This would indeed have hung from a chatelaine. Probably a friendly gift to a neighbor, and a very nice one, indeed. Brent IP: Logged |

I had also thought it could have been a neighborly present, but the pincushion angle didn't occur to me. Hopefully when I get that new Gorham catalog CD ROM this (and other) questions will be answered. IP: Logged |

It's a Court Plaster Holder, for Victorian band-aids. IP: Logged |

It is a Victorian fan holder, that attaches to a chatelaine or long chain. I saw one with the fan inside at a show this past weekend. IP: Logged |

Hi Victoria, That must have been the smallest fan in the world. It is a Court Plaster Holder. IP: Logged |
