Can anyone help me ID a hallmark on a piece of Taxco silver jewelry. I can read most of it but there is one word that is unclear to me. It is a round stamp that says "sterling 925 on top and Taxco in the middle but the other word on the bottom of the circle is something like Saartenca or aartenca. The eagle mark has a 3 in it. Thanks.

Mexican hallmarks from a piece by Villasana (c. 1950s-60s) including "MEXICO, TAXCO", Eagle mark with "3", "VILLASANA, 925"
-from Modersilver.com

alassc,
Mexico used the Eagle as proof of the quality of silver and assigned a number only to a specific manufacturer except #1 which was sometimes used as a generic. I would assume your word then is "Villasana" and that would be the maker.

There were more than one taller that is attributed with using the 3 mark. I do not have my books with me at the moment. I would be wary of attributing a maker by the 3 in the eagle. This method is filled with flaws.

Fred is correct. The #3 assay mark is very common and many makers used it. It is impossible to pin down a maker using the #3 mark alone.

I think the key to identifying the maker of your piece, alassc, is figuring out what the other word in the circle is. Are you able to post a picture of the piece or the mark?

I checked my reference library and found that approx. 300 plus different makers have used the 3 in the eagle mark.
