Hello All,

I recntly purchased this small cuff bracelet with applied "Rustic" initials. It is marked as shown, with a diamond-shaped trademark that appears to read AM?, with what looks like a cross running down through the M. I wish the mark were a bit clearer, but perhaps it rings a bell with someone? I would appreciate any help; thanks!

Brent

Brent--unfortunately the maker's mark does not ring a bell. Probably one of numerous undocumented silversmiths working in the Arts & Crafts mode. My guess is the bracelet is circa 1920s. I would say that the initials are more Oriental in style than rustic. The use of Oriental motifs was one of the trends of the 20s-30s. Especially popular were Oriental-style lettering, jadeite and jadeite-style glass, and Oriental characters.

BINGO!!!,

Brent, The mark is that of the Art Metal Studios of Chicago. I thought that it looked familiar. The mark is shown clearly in Darling's book, page 94. Founded by Edmund Boker & Ernest Gould in 1912 as the Chicago Art Silver Shop. They dropped Chicago from the name in 1918 and then changed the name to Art Metal Studios in 1934. This would date the bracelet to after 1934. Jewelry and novelties became a mainstay when the demand for holloware diminished.

Good find, Fred! It was right under my nose the whole time. I think the Art Metal Studios is a fairly collectible name.

Paul,

Most all Chicago metalwork from the last century is collectible. I came across a listing for a website dedicated to Chicago Silver. They even showed some bracelets like Brent's example.

Here's a complete example of one their marks, it's a variation on the bracelet mark, but very similar.

Is it just me, or does tgny's mark look quite different from the Art Metal Studios mark?

What tgny posted looks like the mark of The Art Silver Shop.

Apparently one was a continuation of the other

There is a commercial site with information about The Silver Art Shop here: chicagosilver.com
