I bought this necklace a couple of months ago and have struggled to do a correct id of it.

There are no markings but it does test as silver. Judging by the acid reaction I would say its lower grade than sterling - probably 800.

These are guesses on my part about it

? Persian - Iran / Iraq origin.
? the arabic writing relates to a specific prayer or passages from the Qu'ran
? Possibly some kind of wedding or dowry necklace.

The clasp suggests it does have some age.
But could this just be Tourist Fayre.

Can anyone shed any light on this as I am a little intrigued by it.

Thank you for any help

Hello there

I forgot to say that the arabic writing on this is on both sides of the necklace - so even the side next to the skin bears the arabic inscriptions.

Thanks

Dusty

Hi Dusty,
Your photos did not materialize. Some old near eastern silver is as low as 650. If the piece has an Arabic inscription, it may be a religious amulet, such as the Ayat al Kursi (the Throne Verse, a very popular prayer), see the Second Surah, around line 255 of the Kuran. I hope this helps.
