It is always wonderful to find something that you have never seen before. We had never seen a Shiebler medallion ring but we found one at the Baltimore show. There is a series of five of the recurring Shiebler medallions circling the ring. This was a first for us. Has anyone else seen a Shiebler ring (besides a napkin ring) and if so what kind?

Sorry to sound stupid, but is this a finger ring?

Yes, it is. Neither one of us have photogenic fingers but that is the tip of Scott's finger in the bottom photo.

There is a Tiffany-retailed Shiebler medallion ring that has been on eBay for at least 6 months. Probably many of us have already seen it.

Paul,

Are you are referring the medallion disks of silver that have been soldered together into a ring?

I have always felt those were made up from left overs (whether by Shiebler or others). This one which clearly started life as a ring from the get go is not something I have seen before.

This is the completed auction listing:

Presented is an exceptionally fine and rare, antique Shiebler - Tiffany Sterling Silver Ring with a Grecian / Roman Coin Motif. The Shiebler Coin Ring dates to the late 19th Century. The Ring, a wide Wedding Band was sold through Tiffany & Co. It bears both the Tiffany & Co. mark plus the Shiebler mark: winged S and the numbers 694. Wonderful Ring, in beautiful, fine condition. .... Very interesting piece. It measures 5/8" wide and is approximately a ring size 5 1/4. ....
What do you think? It hadn't crossed my mind that it didn't begin life as a ring, but upon closer inspection, I guess it's not completely impossible.

Several years ago, I saw a pair of rings, one with a spider and one with a fly. They were unsigned. The spider was an exact match for a spider on a Shiebler pin I have, so I felt confident that the spider and fly designs were made by Shiebler. However, at the time, I dismissed the rings as having been made up from original Shiebler cufflinks or collar buttons.

A Tiffany retail mark.

I think this piece could have been made up by either Shiebler or Tiffany.

My off the cuff thinking is that it was made up by Tiffany because getting a die to strike the back of the medallion so evenly when it was already a ring would have been difficult.

June, Your ring appears to have been formed from a strip that was punched with medalion dies and then cut at an appropriate length and soldered. There appears to be a solder seam in the first image oposite the makers mark. I suspect we may find bangle bracelets in this same style. The irregular contours may be a result of the stamping process and someone decided it was acceptable.
