Scott, I have not owned or, to my recollection, seen this specific type of pendant before. However, the generic term lavaliere is now used to describe a wider range of pendant styles, seemingly most commonly the delicate, mass-produced 10-14k pendants from 1900s-1910s, such as this one:

They frequently seem to involve pearls (baroque & seed) and small diamonds. Sometimes real or synthetic colored stones.

The Wikipedia entry on lavaliere presents a narrower definition:

quote:
A lavalier is a type of jewelry, consisting of a pendant with one stone, suspended from a necklace. It is named for the type of pendant popularized by the Duchesse de la Vallire, a mistress of King Louis XIV of France. Within the fashion world, the name was eventually shortened to "lavalier(e)".

In the Greek system in American colleges, it refers specifically to a necklace bearing a fraternity's or sorority's letters. An accepted gift of a lavalier, called lavaliering, indicates a romantic commitment that may develop into a long term engagement, and marriage.

In the classic silent movie "Safety Last", Harold Lloyd's character is attempting to get money buy a lavalier for his girlfriend. I wonder how many times a viewer has pulled out the dictionary for a definition after watching the movie. I know I had not heard the term before I saw it!

It interesting to see where the term lavalier mike or microphone must have originated.
