I would like help in identifying this lovely red stone silver mesh necklace.

The scan doesn't do the red stone justice; it's a true red, smooth and opaque.

Any and all help appreciated!
Thanks!
Virginia

I suspect it may be have been assembled with Russian niello work. The clasp appears to be modern and one would have to examine the woven or loop in loop chain to determine if it were silver. Does the center piece with the stone also contain niello work?

Interesting piece.

THANK YOU for your thoughts!

The stone does not contain niello, which I looked up on the internet. The engraved pieces on the chain do not have texture (they're smooth, as if covered/coated).

Also, why wouldn't the chain be silver if the engraved pieces are on it?

I agree with what you say about the clasp. It does not seem to be a part of piece. It just gets curiouser and curiouser..

I agree with Fred that the plaques use Russian (or perhaps Middle Eastern?) niello work, and that the clasp is modern. Also several parts do not look silver. In fact I find construction of this piece odd. Could it have been made from something else, such as a belt, at a later date?

I bought the necklace in an auction lot. I don't have any other information. I have found similar 900 jewelry on the web, but they were Peruvian... mine has no llamas however. The great thing about these reply's is that they are farther afield than I would have ever thought. Did Russian artisans use 900 silver? The 900 is marked on the pendant. Short of taking the whole thing apart, how (where) would I find verification of these things?

My bad... the 900 is on the brace behind the pendant, which would seem to suggest that the braces up the chain are 900 as well???

I have not heard of Russians using 0.900 grade silver. The most frequent silver quality I see is their 84 standard (84 zolotniks fine).
