Sometimes you are lucky to find an object that begins a search and a discovery. I acquired this dress clip a few years ago and by chance found the maker. This is the work of Frederick E. Fifield. Little is know of this New York state maker. A few collectors know of his copper work.

His mark is three dashes in a circle.

Is there a back story?

Scott,
My interest in the Arts & Crafts Movement has kept me in contact with sites dealing with the Movement. A New York collector and his father were collectors of Benedict copper and had set up a website dedicated to their work and others in the Syracuse area. One of the lesser know craftsmen of the area was Fifield and I happened to see this dress clip at an auction and acquired it. Since that time I have found a smaller unsigned brooch of the identical ship. I present it here in hopes of helping other discover more of this obscure maker.

I don't know if this is really new information on this gentleman, or if it is even the correct person, but there was a Frederick E Fifield who was born in New Hampshire in about 1874 and going by the census's alone worked primarily as a machinist at least until 1920.

In 1930 he is listed as a merchant in art goods, retail in Hancock, New York.

He is listed again there in 1940 as a silversmith and his wife Ruth is operating their shop.

Maybe a local library or some other source there will have even more information. Hope this helps.

I was immediately struck by the similarity to a brooch made by Franklin Porter of Danvers, MA in 1926, on the occasion of Salem's tercentennial and based on the brig Leander. He made several of them and they were so popular that he and his daughter continued to produce them.

This was discussed in a thread in the Silver Jewelry forum called Franklin Porter started by Scott on 07-30-2010 with info on the brooch contributed by Chicago Silver, with photos. Or you can google it -- there are many examples online, including one at Historic New England. (Easier than my trying to photograph and post pix of my own example of this brooch!)

I'm guessing that the success of the item may have led Mr Fifield to produce something similar.
