An ethnic group or ethnicity is a socially-defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural or national experience.

I see the term "Ethnic jewelry" used often but other than a mental image of crude craft jewelry from almost anywhere ... I don't think I understand the term "Ethnic jewelry".

Is there a better way to think about the term "Ethnic jewelry"?

If you don't have a copy I would pick up Dover's Primitive and Folk Jewelry by Martin Gerlach. You can find it online for a few dollars.

Dover's reprint is of a 1906 edition, so everything pictured in the volume obviously dates before then. The pieces illustrated therein date from ancient up until around the 1906 publication date. The book has its faults--many entries do not give dates, for instance--but this is probably one of my most referenced books, helping me ID ethnicities and forms. It has solved a number of flea market whatzits...

So to answer your question, when i think of "ethnic" jewelry, I think of what is featured in this book.
