My first exposure to silver charms was my grandma's charm bracelet, which had fairly mediocre charms, such as the typical "Break in case of emergency" box supposed to hold a folded $1 bill (she must have encountered an emergency, because at some point, she removed the dollar and replaced it with a piece of blank, folded paper).

It took me a little while of shopping and collecting to realize how fascinating and amazing antique charms could be...if you own or have images of any really great charms, please post them.

Here are a few I love:

Deco enamel black cat:

German gilt silver "unforgettable days" book, the inside pages have various names and late 1890s dates inscribed on them:

French gilt silver "Mon Secret" with enameled heart inside:

Tag charm bracelet, each tag engraved with a different name--I love the tags engraved "Sleep" and "Pomp":

Shiebler cube charm, probably part of a fob or bracelet:
