This is an incredibly lifelike c1880 sterling 3D grasshopper brooch marked by William Wilson & Son. I'm not sure if it was made in the Wilson shop or not--the detail and casting remind me of some of Peter Krider's figural critters on table silver. It is apparently a very accurately rendered grasshopper, most likely a horse lubber. It is 2 3/4" long with a weight of 23g.

Good heavens! That is almost terrifying.

i wore it on a suit lapel recently. the middle legs come down far enough on each side to keep it firmly stabilized.

the little bead holding the back legs together is the only non-anatomical detail in the design. i believe the maker thoughtfully added it to prevent the long legs from snagging on something & breaking off.
