The Neue Gallerie in New York City is hosting the exhibition Viennese Silver: Modern Design, 1780-1918. The exhibition includes more than 180 objects of daily use including pieces commissioned by Emperor Joseph II and objects by Josef Hoffman and Koloman Moser. The exhibition runs through February 16, 2004. The Gallerie is located at 1048 Fifth Avenue at 86th Street.

Hello June -
Alas, can't get to N.Y. for this show, but was able to purchase the huge catalogue titled Viennese Silver: Modern Design 1780-1918, edited by Michael Huey. For anyone interested in 20th Century silver design, this book is a must, and has some of the most thought-provoking essays I've read in a long time. The illustrations are breath-taking.

This is a splendid show -- well worth traveling to see; I was there in November. It's very innovative and thought-provoking in approach, redefining the concept of "modern" to include even the late 18th century, and suggesting that classic 20th-century design wasn't a break with the past so much as a reaffirmation of certain longstanding craft traditions.

Good Austrian silver is rarely encountered in America, but this show presents room after room of it, from simple beakers to Maria Theresa's solid-gold chocolate service.

And while you're at the Neue Galerie, to cap off a pleasantly Mitteleuropan afternoon, stop at the cafe downstairs for the best Viennese pastries this side of the Danube.

If you can believe it, we haven't yet been to this exhibition even though it is right here in New York City. But thanks to your enthusiastic responses to both exhibition and catalog, we have moved it up on our to do list. Thanks to all.
