Another touch of luck has come my way from the dead letter file -- a single sheet, stampless letter from James W. Dixon to James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield. It is postmarked Baltimore 15 October 1835 and contains an order for Thomas Palmer & Company, a testimonial from the same, and a personal note from Dixon to his parents.

As with the Fletcher letter, I have uploaded some high resolution scans for anyone interested:

Inside Outside
Warning -- these are large files, approx 2.75 mgs each

The layout of the order is a bit too complicated to transcribe here, so I will work on a tabled web page tonight. It details more than 50 sets of tea and coffee services in both Britannia and silverplate using style and design numbers. Palmer & Company were evidently very satisfied with goods previously received:

James Dixon & Sons -- Gentn (Copy) Baltimore 14 Octr 1835
We have the pleasure to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 27th July last covering invoice of BM & Plated Goods. We repeat the word Pleasure, for in so doing we fully intend the word to have its full effect. We unhesitatingly say that we have never received any goods of the like in such good order & expect same good packing in future. We again invest you with open order for 200 to be invested in something new, useful & fanciful. Your Mr. J. W. Dixon with whom we have the
[pleasure?] of his acquaintance, can give our ideas, the order to be executed without delay & forwarded to W & J Brown & Co in whom draw as usual.
(Signed) Thos Palmer

Below is added
All Plated for this market Positively [underscored 3 times] to be marked Dixon & Sons -- Sheffield

On back is added:
My Very Dear Parents
Since forwarding my last I have been under the necessity of consulting Dr Buchler
[?] an eminent physician, having had "the chills & fevers" but am happy to say am much recovered, (but very careful). Our Plate is making way here. Harrold will forward a pretty order in a few days for this place. Palmer was very much pleased with the last lot. As for House information, I feel entirely lost, only hearing once a month. More would be valued.
Yours J W Dixon

Time for some research!

Here is a transcription of the order as best I can make out -- James did not have the clearest handwriting.
