I just came across a beautiful and fascinating book entitled “Contemporary Silver” by Rabinovitch and Clifford. This is a book of fish and cake slices commissioned, if I read the text correctly, by Professor Rabinovitch with a simple instruction to each silversmith to “supply a server”. The resulting servers are outstanding creations by sixty two English and American silversmiths including Robert Butler; better known here as agleopar. Congratulations agleopar!
This book was published in 2000 and may have already been noted, but it is still available and it a great testament to not only the skill of contemporary silversmiths, but also to their rich imagination. It is a book well worth buying.

I believe there has been an additional publication, covering some later additions to that collection (ie. since year 2000). Perhaps someone with a copy could elucidate.

Contemporary Silver Part II, Recent Commissions, written by B.S.Rabinovitch , 2005 - and available from the Victoria and Albert Museum Bookstore, London.
All commissioned fish-and cakeslices were donated by Prof. Rabinovitch to the V&A and are beautifully displayed at the V&A, in the center showcase of the Silver Galleries.

ahwt, Thank you for your kind compliment, really I was honored to be included in the company of the likes of Malcolmb Appleby, Leslie Durbin and such!
My favorite part of Professor Rabinovitchs idea to commission contemporary work is that it really was a very afordable way to get all those outstanding objects.
And yes, we were only asked to stay within a certain size limit, otherwise there were no constraints!

I am sorry I only just saw your post as I have been "off line" for a month or so, thanks again, Rob

Ahwt, Thank you for the kind thoughts and I am sorry that I have been “off line” since you posted and did not see this sooner. I have not seen the new slices or the new book yet.
The honor for me, is to be in the company of some of the finest smiths in the world! I was lucky to go to the opening of the Goldsmiths Hall exhibition for the first part of the collection and meet the likes of Leslie Durban, now in his eighties.
Professor Rabinovitch hit on a great idea, that for a modest sum he could have a sample of some of the best smiths work. By limiting the commission to a simple form he made us all stretch (and I think that most realized that they would be compared to the others and gave him more than was paid for). I may not like all the slices, but 98% are top work and they all are, at the least, very interesting!
