I just picked these up and thought them pretty enough to post:

from Louisville c 1875

and San Francisco c 1877 -- does anyone know who the principles were?

According to Edgar W. Morse in Silver in the Golden State Barrett and Sherwood only marked silver made by others such as Gorham and Vanderslice - "there is no evidence that they employed silversmiths." They were, however, "pioneers in making gold-quartz jewelry, which they exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in New York in 1853." According to Morse, the firm was founded in 1849 and continued in business past 1902. He does not provide their full names nor any biographical information.

There is an extensive biography of Kendrick in Boultinghouse.

Nice cards.

Yes, B&S has proved remarkably difficult to trace out (the Kendrick's are already in my project). There are abundant notices in the the Alta and other media about the firm, but I have not seen one that names either man. I suspect that Sherwood may have been English, but only based on their intimate connections with London firms producing high-end chromometers and the like. There are several lines of the extensive New England Barrett family that made the move west in the 1850s, but without something more to go on, it's just idle speculation.

Yes, Robert Sherwood who was born in Ireland in 1830 and Alfred (Alf) Barrett who was born in England in 1829.

Fairly extensive information about the Kendricks which includes family history and a relatively crude family tree has been found also, but this might go along with Swarter's reference.

A correction to my previous posting for this topic: by his own report, Robert Sherwood was born in Ireland in 1827.

Also, he immigrated to the United States in 1849.
