In the same vein, but not as interesting as the handbill, here's a couple Louisiana silversmiths that were sold:

3/25/1771 housed in parish courthouses,
Orleans (including Chapitoulas), language Spanish, seller Henry Gardrat, buyer Pedro Songy, name Juan Bautista, race black, skills silversmith "platero," currency type peso fuerto = 1.75 p, value of sale 300, sale common price 525.

3/4/1781 housed in parish courthouses,
Orleans (including Chapitoulas).
language Spanish, seller: Nicolas Vebert, buyer: Peter Walker, name: Narciso, race black, age 23, silversmith, birthplace Louisiana Creole, currency type piastre = 1 p, value of sale 1080, sale common price 1080. Mother of this slave is Serfina.

Wow, right in between the tools and the unset stones, as if he himself is a tool or a raw material.

Does anyone know how slaves were trained in crafts like silversmithing? Was it similar to how apprentices were trained--minus the freedom-after-seven-years part?

The exhibit on slavery in New York at The New-York Historical Society a couple years ago had a display of objects made by slave craftsmen (? craftspeople?). I believe there was some silver included. But I don't remember if the particular items on display were known to have been made by slaves, or if they were just typical of the sorts of items slaves might have made.

The term "slave" as listed in the census and tax records included all indentured persons during their terms of indenture, whether they were permanently indentured "owned" or serving a term before freedom, and regardless of race. Indentures could be sold like property, except that apprentices under indentures assigned by "Orphans' Court" authorization) required court approval before being transferred to another master prior to completion of their assigned term (usually 7 years).

As is usual, I came across this looking for something else. From the Philadelphia Packet, 01 May 1784

which makes an interesting (albeit unfortunate) connection between the smiths Halsted, Brasher, and Le Telier
